They called it worthless. He refused to change a single note.
On Christmas Eve, 1874, a young Tchaikovsky sat down at the piano to play his brand-new Piano Concerto No. 1 for Nikolai Rubinstein — head of the Moscow Conservatory and the pianist he hoped would premiere it. Rubinstein listened in silence. Then, as Tchaikovsky later recalled, the verdict came: worthless, absolutely unplayable, fit only to be destroyed or entirely rewritten.
Tchaikovsky’s answer is printed on this shirt: “I shall not alter a single note. I shall publish the work exactly as it stands.”
He found another pianist. Hans von Bülow premiered the concerto in Boston in 1875 to a thrilled audience — and within a few years, Rubinstein himself became one of its greatest champions. Today it is one of the most beloved piano concertos ever written.
This archival portrait, taken in 1874 — the very year of that fateful Christmas Eve — captures Tchaikovsky as he was then: arms crossed, unmoved, completely sure of his work.
First, he ignored the critics. Then he outlasted them.
