At a time when men who danced were dismissed, Ted Shawn refused to take a back seat. He asserted the beauty of the masculine dance form and placed male dancers in the spotlight for all time.
Shawn didn't just dance — he built. After co-founding the seminal Denishawn school and company with Ruth St. Denis, he formed Ted Shawn and His Men Dancers, an all-male company, and introduced them across America and the world. He went further — in 1933 he founded Jacob's Pillow in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts. It became one of the most prestigious dance festivals and schools in the world. It still is.
This photograph — taken by Arthur F. Kales, circa 1918 — captures Shawn at the height of his powers. Alone on a rock. Looking upward. Unashamed.
