The original King.
In 1653, the most powerful man in Europe took the stage.
Kings did not dance. It was considered beneath them — undignified, unroyal, unbecoming of absolute power. Louis XIV did it anyway. At just 14 years old he performed as Apollo the Sun King in the Ballet Royal de la Nuit — a 12-hour spectacular that began at sundown and lasted until sunrise, featuring 45 dances across one extraordinary night.
Louis XIV didn't just defy convention. He didn't just patronize dance — he performed it. He founded the first professional ballet academy, codified the vocabulary of classical ballet, and formally established the art that still exists today.
Every ballet dancer who has since lived owes something to the king who would dance.
This illustration — created in 1653 by court artist Henri de Gissey — captures Louis XIV as Apollo, the Sun King, in his most famous role. Regal. Radiant. Revolutionary. A image nearly 400 years old that still feels like power today.
