He didn't limit his dance to the earth. He put tap in the air.

In his time, critics called him the Master of Tap. Congress named May 25th — his birthday — National Tap Dance Day. Fred Astaire paid tribute to him on film. Duke Ellington composed music in his honor.

His genius revolutionized the art form — and his blinding talent forced a prejudiced world to stand and applaud.

Off the stage, Robinson was equally groundbreaking. He lobbied President Roosevelt for equal treatment of Black soldiers during World War II, fought to integrate the Dallas Police Department, and staged the first integrated public event in Miami — a fundraiser that brought Black and white residents together in the same room for the first time.

The name Bojangles is a legend that still echoes. Watch him once and you understand everything.
