Anna Pavlova — by the standards of the day, she didn't have what it took — bad turnout, bent knees, weak ankles. In ballet school, they called her The Broom and La Petite Sauvage. Yet she accepted herself and her limitations and conjured an ephemeral romanticism that captured the heart of Russia.
Then she left the ballet institutions behind — the Imperial Ballet and Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. She created her own company and danced for the world. And where she danced, ballet companies were born.
She is seen here in this 1908 archival photograph as The Dying Swan, a legendary piece she created with choreographer Michel Fokine.
